Trump threatens to strike Iran's civilian infrastructure

 U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday (July 8, 2026) that the memorandum of ‌understanding signed with Iran to end the conflict was “over”, adding he didn’t ⁠want to engage with Tehran.

The interim ceasefire agreement signed between Washington and Tehran was intended to provide a 60-day window for negotiations ‌on a permanent agreement, but indirect ‌talks ⁠in Qatar ended last week ⁠with no sign of headway. 


Earlier, the U.S. military unleashed a new wave of strikes against Iran after it said Tehran struck three ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran retaliated with strikes targeting Bahrain and Kuwait.

The attacks on shipping and the resulting strikes came during the dayslong funeral for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed February 28 in the war’s first moments at age 86. The funeral, which ends on Thursday (July 9, 2026), had been thought to be a period of lower tensions — though mourners have repeatedly called for the killings of US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
